ok, i tried this before and it failed to boot. but this morning i figured i'd
grab another box out of my cluster and try it and it indeed does boot fine.
there must be a hardware problem on the first box. thanks Joerg-Uwe for
prompting me to get up and have another go at it!

You must boot the "tga" kernel "vm_tga.gz" from the SuSE 6.4 CD No.1.
