hmm, tried it but still get the same (non!) result.

what can i be doing wrong?
i donwloaded the complete 2.2.16 src from alphalinux.org, copied the
config file from the installation disk to .config, did a 'make menuconfig'
without changing any settings and compiled it with:
    make dep clean boot
then i copied it to recompiled.gz on the dos partition, rebooted and
    loaded it with
    bootl up1000.pal recomp~1.gz root=/dev/hda6
ie exact same command as for the 'working' kernel, only different kernel
    name.

the new kernel still hangs without saying squint, only a flashing cursor.
btw, is there no way to force a reboot without turning the power off??

Richard, do you still have the patch for 2.2.13 - any chance of trying
    that? pretty please??

    thanks for your time,

    /martin
