There are bunch of gs_*-5.50-5.alpha.rpm's inside suse/ap1 directory of
ftp.suse.com. Unfortunately, these new versions are not trouble-free.
They cannot handle gray-scale correctly. Then, I realized that
the mailing-list never dealt with this problem. I think I am the
only one who installed SuSE-6.3 by FTP. If you installed SuSE-6.3
with CDroms you did not get gs_*-5.50, but gs_*-5.10. That's why I think
you did not have such gs problems.
Now, I can't get gs_*-5.10 from anywhere. They don't exist even in
www.rpmfind.net. Would SuSE put those old versions back in the ftp
update site?
Of course, anybody can help me by sending those gs_*-5.10-?.alpha.rpm's
from the SuSE CD's to me.
All in all, I switched from RedHat alpha to SuSE alpha for some reasons.
But, suse's defalut kernel does not recognize the printer, then, "lprold",
"ftpd", "install_xx", and now "ghostscript"....
I realized finally and am sorry to say that SuSE has its own sleuth of
installation troubles no less than RedHat.

G. Hugh Song
