We were able to boot SuSE 7.1/Kernel 2.4.4 with both modules on two stock
XP1000, no problems there. For the de4x5, we used the following lines in
/etc/modules.conf:
alias eth0 de4x5
options de4x5 args=eth0:fdx
The tulip driver worked as well, but offers just a very poor performance.
Netperf reported a mere 6 MBit out of a 100 MBit connection (de4x5: 68
MBit).

In SuSE 6.4/Kernel 2.2.14 or SuSE 7.1/Kernel 2.2.19, the de4x5 driver is
compiled in and your module definitions probably were just ignored.
Try out Kernel 2.2.19 as supplied on the SuSE CDs, it should work fine.
We reverted back to 2.2.x on our production machines anyway due to some
serious VM problems (significant slowdowns for large file I/O when
bdflush/kupdated get activated).
