    Hi List,

    Greetings from Brazil.

First of all, please forgive me because some of the questions I will post here will look very naive questions.

We are working on a data warehouse project with SuSE 7.2 and Oracle 8.1.7. This project is on development phase yet so it does not if the server goes down many times. But at the middle of December/2001 according to our schedule, that project will be in production with initially 30 concurrent users. So here the questions:

1 - I read somewhere in the net, maybe on SuSE's site, that for production environment the correct choice is the use of SuSE Enterprise version (7.0). If this is the case, what about the kernel between Enterprise 7.0 and SuSE 7.2 Professional. They are the same? Why Enterprise is better than Professional for Production ?

2 - The Enterprise version if I am not wrong deliver new releases less frenquently than Professional Version, about twice a year I guess. So what about the patchs, specially the security ones and the kernel enhancements, do they have to be applied with the same frequency as in Professional Version?

3 - I know that there is a limitation of file size (2GB) under 7.2 Professional. So how to correct this: (a) with the operating system itself and (b) with Oracle ? Does SuSE Enterprise 7.0 (or Professional 7.3) and Oracle 9i hit it ?

4 - Does SuSE Enterprise or Professional perform assync I/O ? Where I can find technical informations and references about what assync I/O is and how this upset SuSE (and Linux) performance ?

5 - Some guys in our company "prefer" Red Hat and the argument they use is that "here in Brazil we do not have support for SuSE". Unfortunately a true that still holds but which I want to implode it soon (at least here on our region (Middle-West)). Personally I have an impression (maybe not so based because as I said I am talking about impression) that the RH distro is tunned to desktop environment and that SuSE is born to the server environment (and that's what I need). I am lucky to be the person who make the choice so I choosed SuSE but what kind of arguments can I use to make the choice more technically oriented ? Is there references, benchmarks, links where I can search for ?

Well I know that this is an extensive e-mail, but I will be very glad for the answers to anyone of the questions. This will help me a lot.

(By the way, sorry with the english's grammar...)

    Thanks in advance

    Oswaldo Castro
