    check out the package "orarun8i.rpm" in
    ftp.suse.com /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/commercial/Oracle

    It does all the stuff like setting the environment (from
    /etc/profile.d/oracle.sh), shm and so on in a pretty and consistent way.
    By the way, "echo xyz > /proc/something" affects the running kernel, so
    there should be no need to reboot. After all, itīs Linux.
