Given how patching either the OS, OS-utilities or an Oracle Database can
conceivably destroy your system or maybe corrupt your database, how long do
most people normally wait before applying patches? And yes this does happen.
(Remember how quickly Oracle yanked their first 10g database 10.1.0.2 ->
10.1.0.3 update last August! They even emailed everyone who downloaded it to
tell them it had some serious issues)
I normally wait a few months to see if anyone reports any nasty system or
database crashes before I update.
And for those people that have the luxary of a complete test database
replica of their production servers, how much testing is enough? A few weeks
of trouble free operation? I.e. zero new errors in the Oracle Alert log or
Linux System log?
Of course taking a Full offline OS-level backup prior to patching ANYTHING
is always a good idea!
Cheers
Mike
