Anders,
VMware won't work unless you have a functioning 3200 controller you
know, regardless of the kernel you use! ;-)
I would try to not use a Mantel kernel unless someone in support
suggests using a specific one. They are very experimental, and if you
read the changelog, you will see that patches are often updated/removed
because they break things.
I would suggest the following based on our own VMware experiences
(probably much of this you already know):
1. Install the kernel and kernel-source packages via YaST and update to
the latest.
2. Do not install the kernel-syms package.
3. Reboot.
4. As root:
#cd /usr/src/linux
#make clean
This ^ step not needed if you have never run the next two commands below
#make cloneconfig
#make prepare
#vmware-config.pl
5. If the installer is able to load the vmware modules, you should be
all set. If not, download this package:
http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/vmware-any-any-update89.tar.gz
6. Unpack the any any package to a temp directory, cd to that directory
and as root run the runme.pl script, which will update your vmware
installation.
7. Run vmware-config.pl again and see what's what.
Note that SuSE just released another SLES9 kernel patch a day or so ago,
after the SP1 release, so I'd run YOU to make sure you are indeed at
the latest kernel level.
Hope that helps,
Mark
