Thanks Daniel, that explains the error (which was misleading,
considering my problem in this case...).
I happened to have a backup of another SLES9 machine on which apache2
was installed but never set up. So I compared the config files, and
found that my default-server.conf file was missing a lot of stuff. This
might have been my fault - fingertrouble tends to be a problem in the
early hours of the morning....
Either ways, I reverted my config files back to the default ones that
come with SLES9, and started over. All working fine now
