I suspect that what Thorsten was referring to was an old problem where the
product description files weren't properly generated. YaST Online Update goes
strictly by the files in /var/adm/YaST/ProdDB/ and for SLES9 there needs to
be two files there, one for SUSE-SLES and one for SUSE-CORE, if you don't get
both you won't get all the updates. It used to be that even when you
installed from an installation server, you only got one of the files, but as
far as I know this problem has been solved, which is why your solution works
with SP2, but I don't think it will work with the original installation CDs
(though I haven't tried it)
