I have written the following to our Novell partner contact (another
Peter) and included this thread. I may be forwarding it on to other
contacts within Novell as well.
It is my rather inarticulate attempt to explain the magnitude of the
issues presented by the recent failure concerning YOU and the update
process in the new SUSE products.
I urge other list members that are troubled by this situation, to
actively contact Novell -- starting with whomever your companies
nearest/closest Novell contact is, and even sending an email to Ron
Hovespian or others. I am sure you can figure out the email addresses
from this link:
http://www.novell.com/company/bios/index.html?sourceidint=t2_about_novell:%20Management%20team
(hint .. Novell email addresses generally follow the format
"firstinitialLastname@novell.com")
Let's excersize our "community" voice clearly and directly, and see
what happens.
text I sent to Novell follows:
--------------------------------------------------------
Peter ..
the forwarded items are from the suse list.
As a reseller partner, who is facing the likelihood of having to teach
SLES10 fundamentals to an enterprise scale customer, how do I justify
this?
I am sure you do not follow these technical details, but I would
appreciate your pushing it up the chain, that partners (not just list
server lurkers) are very unhappy that the "local YOU" options of
earlier YAST versions was broken/abandoned for a ZEN implementation
that .... just does not work.
Corporate needs to know that this situation must be fixed ... and soon.
Whether that be by simply re-enabling the old functionality, and
making the "new stuff" available as an option to be chosen, or ...
some other method .... it needs to happen. Really this is an
embarrassment for Novell the way this whole situation has been
handled.
At this point, "take the lumps" and publicly admit errors in the
approach, explain what you were trying to do, and then move forward
quickly with a fix.
There is grave danger of alienating a large segment of the community.
I am sure, Peter, that folks in Corp offices "know" that mistakes were
made, but they *may not* realize just how damaging the mistake is, and
how simple it could be to fix it.
Again, please pass it on.
Peter
