Caveat - SGI (where I work) sells Itanium servers and not x86.

SLES runs fine on Itanium but I would rather look at applications and future
needs than chips. That is are the apps you want available on ia64? Looking at
our internal install servers I think every rpm shipped with x86 is shipped with ia64
so from an OS standpoint everything should be there. SLES ships with the ia32el
package if you need to run ia32 only binaries on an ia64 platform.
