At least with SLES 9 SP 3 it's possible to check ISOs and CDs with
checkmedia. The checkmedia package is available starting with SuSE
Linux 9.3. For other products please check
[http|ftp]://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/lmuelle/ or SuSE any mirror.
See /usr/share/doc/packages/checkmedia/README for how this tool works.
The checksums are _not_ included with the checkmedia package. Newer
product ISOs/ CDs have the the md5sum included in a 512 byte range
reserved for application specific use. By this you don't have to update
the tool any time a new product was released. This tool also works with
self created ISO images. Even if they are bigger than the original
files.
As a user you have to call
checkmedia /path/to/the/SLES9-SP-3-arch-...iso
or
checkmedia /dev/cdrom
For products where checkmedia doesn't work we provide the md5sums at the
download page at http://download.novell.com/ Look for a section titled
'MD5 Verification Number:' after you authenticated for the download.
Steffen: If possible start your installation with the SP 3 CDs and not
the GA version. The SP 3 CDs provide an enahnced kernel for the
installation and the installed system.
