GUI makes very important customer's impression, and good GUI reduce number
of possible administrator's errors, reduce reaction time in case of
problems. I got few Solaris servers from admins who did not used GUI - as a
result, when we set up proper GUI's, we began to make tasks 10 - 20 times
faster than before, and began to make some tasks which we never did before
because of complexity - just because, yes, good GUI /it was Veritas VM and
Veritas cluster/). Don't underestimate importance of good GUI on the
servers.
Of course it is not so important (I used to keep KDM in _no local X11_ mode
on our servers, and use X -query or slogin -X
to connect when necessary) as on desktops, but it shows a very bad trend in
Novell - they can junk very good things just because of internal _politics_.
(KDE vs Gnome - I said, for example, it is necessary to input into focused
window without raising it - you can not do it in Gnome.
I am not sure if you can make cluster configuration when you multipkly input
to a few widnows at once, when working in Gnome.
National charset is important for server's admin. Etc... In reality, if you
see Gnome, you have impression of amateur system, while KDE have a view and
properties of good production system - they are absolutely incompatible in
their features and convenience. Yes, if you are a hacker you can got 90% of
the same things from Gnome, and yes, Gnome is smaller and faster.)
