Subject: [suse-sles-e] Problem After Applying Latest Kernel Patch on SLES9

We have a SLES9 server, fully patched to SP3 + online updates.

This morning we remotely applied the latest kernel update and rebooted
the server immediately thereafter.

We are now able to ssh in only with errors, if at all.

In the first instance, trying to ssh in with a user account in ldap will
result in the session displaying the motd, and then the system
immediately closes the session.

Sometimes, the same user can log in successfully. Basic commands like
"ls" work ok, but as soon as the user tries to su to root, all that
happens is that the command prompt is displayed. The su command fails
with no error displayed on the terminal. Subsequent commands entered by
the originally logged in user also just wind up redisplaying the command
prompt, without the command taking any effect.

If the user then logs off, they can no longer ssh in effectively; the
user apparently can log in as the motd is displayed briefly but then
immediately the system closes the ssh connection.

We disallow root logins via ssh, but we have some other local users
"just in case". None of these local users can log in via ssh anymore;
when they try, they just keep getting asked for their password three
times before the system closes the connection.

Other services running on this system seem to be functioning OK, but the
server is in a data center and we at the moment have no effective remote
access.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Mark
