The problem just evaporated, now it all works.
I haven't done anything clever.
I think it was a YaST update that fixed it,
I got an email talking about an incompatibility with php4-recode
Hallo,
php4-recode can not be used in combination with php4-mysql,
php4-imap or apache2-mod_auth_mysql.
Loading them at the same time results in apache and/or
php segmentation faults. For this reason the recode module
has been removed from php.ini. Moreover the script sce_install
used for registering modules in php.ini no longer register
the recode module but issue a warning instead.
The only package on SUSE LINUX depeding on php4-recode is phpMyAdmin,
we will provide a YOU update that removes this dependency soon.
It is recommended to use php4-iconv instead of php4-recode
for character set conversion.
See /usr/share/doc/packages/php4/README.SuSE for more details.
Just to be on the safe side, I un-installed php4-recode.
I'm relieved it's working but annoyed
that I couldn't find any useful logs.
PS: Dear Coltrey,
Out of curiosity I commented the php_flag engine on
line back out of httpd.conf and it still works.
Seems to make no difference either way.
Thanks for your interest in my problem,
michaelj
