Yes, I know about common code base. But we had the same situation with SLES9
(and SLES8 - I am not sure because it was long ago); anyway, in both cases,
releases was not usable at al until first service pack/.
If it is massive open test (I personally have access, so I cannot see if it
is open test or is not), I am very glad.
Anyway, someone must analyze, whiy SLES9 release had a critical problems
with stability and why they was not revealed during testing, and prevent it
for SLES10.
But let's see:
http://www.novell.com/products/linuxenterpriseserver/
I do not anything about SLES beta.
I can find SuSe 10.1 Beta (using Novell's search):
public beta
GroupWise 7 Support Pack 1
Novell Client 1.2 for Linux
SUSE Linux 10.1
ldif2dib Utility
so it's really have open beta programm. For enterrpise server, things are
worst - Novell made all SLES customers beta testers, issuing systems which
was not well tested on mass installations (such as SLES9 release).
There is not magic in the world. If company have a huge customer's base,
like Microsoft, it can work with closed Beta testers community.
But if have not so big community of beta testers, then it need something
alternative - some way to have systems installed
on thousands of servers, around the globe (in different countroies, with
different applications, different hardware) and have it used for
non critical applications for a while, before claiming it _ready to
enterprise server_. SuSe and SLES common code base helps a muich (and
OpenSuSe helps a much) with such task, but tehre are stil many components
which are not common.
