this is simply a lie. Both SLES8 and SLES9 were usable at first
release. Where they usable in all environments? No. Were they usable in
all environments after Service Pack N? Still not. If you want to deploy
SLES, your options are to either use certified hardware, or download a
trial version and see if it fits, and if does not either think about
changing the hardware or buying a support contract that entitles you to
get those issues fixed. This procedure is not really different from
any other OS you can find, although the likeliehood of your
non-certified system to be supported may vary.

Why would you expect that? Marcus said that SL10.1 is the open beta test
for the code base for SLES10.

If you are concerned about SLES10 quality regarding your setup, nobody
has prevented you from testing your environment with SL10.1, report bugs
and have them fixed. The code base is the same. I somehow am not sure if
everybody understands what that means: Same source, same binaries, same
installation process, same hardware support... There are differences in
the selection of packages, in branding (pictures and stuff), in a couple
of default settings. Nobody forces you to restrict installing 10.1 only
to your little PC and then complaining that you weren't able to test for
SLES10 on your Big Machine.
Only exception is architecture: If you've got a IA64 or s390 machine
where there's no SL version for, then you would really, really need a
SLES beta. But not for i386, x86_64 and ppc.

Please explain again, why MS should be able to develop using a number of
closed beta testers, but Novell would not be able to develop using a
number of closed beta testers. I didn't understand that. The size of the
customer base is not relevant.

(Not only) You seem to assume that our closed beta testers only test on
common components. I would really like to know how you got that
misconception. One of the criteria in the selection process for the
closed beta program is in fact the 'uncommonness' of the hardware.
