Linux is _common use operating system_.
It means that NO ONE QA can test it well enough. No one single company in
the world can test it enough. The
only way to make a final tests for such things are _common worldwide
installations_ by thousands of engineers into thousands of DIFFERENT
environments and then running THOUSANDS of DIFFERENT applications.
It explains, that _we tested, partners tested_ (and I tested - I have full
beta access) can not solve problem.
Ok, Novell and Beta testers tested SLES9 SP2 - why they did not noticed
PRIMITIVE bug - if you install SP2 over RELEASE and if
it is DELL 2850, resulting system will never reboot? Why SLES9 Release was
(and it IS - you stil download it) so unstable that you cannot run it in
production at all?
Why 'YaST2 Backup/Restore' never ever worked, if you have packages with '++'
in their names, or have files with '"' in their names?
QA of operating system is EXTREMELY COMPLICATED task. No Novell, no SuSe are
experienced enough to do such thing by themself (even Microsoft cannot do
it). Few hundred of partners makes a good job, but they do not test it on
occasional installations with different applications.
So, it is 100% garanteed that FIRST PUBLIC (open to evaluate and purchase)
version will reveal important bugs in a few weeks.
It is not doubted by anyone in the world. Just for example, I worked in a
company with extremely good STRESS TEST lab, we had narrow-target software,
and after all, when it was time to deploy to the customers, we always had a
critical bugs in first versions (and it was not operating system). /I worked
in OS business for a few years, too/.
And, because it is 100% garanteed, it is not a question if you have open
beta or have not - you will ALWAYS HAVE open beta. The only concern is, if
you name your OpenBeta as Release (which is fraud because version-0 have a
quality of open beta) or name it Beta and then deploy real stable RELEASE in
1 - 2 month.
.
If Novell is reluctant to open last RC betas to the public, then Novell will
have a reputation (which you already HAVE) _their Releases are really beta
quality, wait until ServicePack1 or until your upgrade_. Is anoone on this
list with different opinion - anyone who trust Novell ("we tested...") and
can treat version-0 as stable production version?? I think, no one here.
