Generally: If we would include everything someone thinks is better than
something that is included already, we would end up with shipping
basically every piece of software there is. We have to make a descision,
and take the risk to exclude some software that actually _is_ better for
the majority of users. We are grateful for feedback that enables us to
refine our software selection, but we can't make everyone happy.

No. It makes it _possible_ to maintain it.

You can get a lot more functionality "for free" than is included in
SLE10. What you don't get for free is the maintenance and support from
Novell. You are welcome to install gv from an external source (including
the 10.1 media), just like the software you wrote inhouse for your own
use or any third party software. As long as you understand that you
don't get SLE-maintenance and support for it.

This is generally true for software not part of the installed operating
system. Oracle, gv, SAP - there are lots. But we can't support every
software you might want to install. And I might add that there are
operating systems out there which offer a lot less software included in
their OS update mechanism...
