The self study guide is, AFAIK, the same material used in the instructor-led
courses from Novell.

I think it's pretty good stuff. Among other things, I used to deliver SUSE
training courses before my current job. I even got a Novell instructor
certification for SLES, but I didn't make much use of it, because I "upgraded
my employer" :-)

I don't know anything about the book you mention, so I can't make any
comparison.

OTOH, I'd recommend attending an instructor-led course, it's much more
efficient than self-study. If only for the fact that you go there and focus
on learning that stuff, typing&clicking instead of trying to take bits of
time off from your usual day-to-day tasks. And you have someone that can
answer questions.
