Sorry, the cause for this problem can be pretty individual. So it's hard
to squeeze the crystal ball and come up with a complete analysis. But
since the DVD is generally readable, and you're able to boot from it,
perhaps it's an option to set up an installation server? Copy the
content from the DVD to a different machine (or loopback the image, if
you've still got it), export it via e.g. FTP or NFS, then boot off the
DVD, hit F4 to chose the installation source, and continue the
installation.
