this was very very useful, thank you.

I still am sometimes a bit frustrated when newer versions of key
products (LAMP parts, mostly) are not updated in a distribution that
is supported for 7 years ... but the logic is pretty clearly layed out
here and makes sense.

Still ... I wonder how we might encourage Novell to adopt a little bit
more aggressive stand, for some key pieces ... as it stands, we are
often confronted with these choices:

1)upgrade to a new distro version
2)continue using an outdated version of (pick your part -- PHP, Apache, MySQL)
3)exit from the supported versions ... upgrade outside of the distro,
maintain our own patch/update process for this component, etc ...

None of those options are necessarily satisfying. I know that there
would always be "some other critically important" piece that someone
insists should be updated through the life of the distro version ...
but I would think that a core of: LAMP and maybe clustering and ...
well, I don't know, maybe that would be enough.

It would enhance the value and attractiveness of the distro, to me.
And it is one of the things about RH that is attractive ... it seems
simpler to find updated and supported versions of products for "older"
versions of that distro.

</end rant>
