I could not find a trend.
Try to use YOU server, syncronize, then install thru it.
I upgraded 1 or 2 servers using just SP4 disks (on the network)
succesfully; then I tried to use local YOU server and it failed (just server
could not find kernel 307, until I resyncronized it with -r optiopn). When I
resyncronized YOU, I still could not upgrade SP3 to SP4.
Looks as there is some inconsistency in the files - so sometimes it works
and sometimes asks for the kernel 307.

My experience was with getting SP4 via YOU (local YOU server).
No boot from external media, just the regular YOU while running.
