You can do that. Of course, you can also boot from CD, mount the root
file system, chroot, install the old kernel rpm and edit menu.lst. But I
admit that this is still far from elegant.

Unfortunately that is not so in every case.

If we wouldn't do proper testing we wouldn't have had all this mess,
because we wouldn't have discovered the issue before the release. ;-)

This last-minute problem was introduced in the RC phase, when a fix for
one thing caused problems in a seemingly different area (simplifying the
issue a bit). It turned out that the resulting problem then was far from
trivial to fix and needed several iterations.

This is unfortunate at that stage, but it's an inherent risk in complex
software developement. It happens frequently that you introduce new
problems by fixing old ones[0], and that's the reason we are very
conservative towards the end of a developement cycle. However, this time
the remaining risk hit us with full force.
