SLES9 has not been abandoned. SP4 is still being developed and is due out later this year.
KDE was not removed. The default is to install GNOME (considering Novell bought Ximian is that a surprise) but you are given a choice at install to default to KDE.
SLES10 is NOT experimental. It is a stable, enterprise OS and worth the upgrade but not required for support.
