Niche??
How the fck can you niche a windowmanager and a filesystem combination??
Enterprice game development, hi resolution medical imaging, hypertthreading
FEM analysis, yes, but a windowmanager and a filesystem combination is NOT
something you niche.
I run SuSE on XFS, does that mean i am running outside design specs or what??
No matter if you run Gnome, KDE, tvm or fvwm2 it is still a question of stable
foundation in kernel, libraries and the underlaying "workings" of the
instalation. Not so much combinations of filesystems and windowmanagers.
True there are problems with KDE, as there is with Gnome, Sure there is issues
with ongoing support/development for ReiserFS and wether or not XFS is secure
in casde of a powerout without UPS's, but all in all, its still a matter of
choice of the person installing.
If i dont like KDE, then i dont use it.
If XFS doesnt feel too secure for me, i wont implement that.
I havent used SLES9 all too much, nor 10, but i have been running SuSE
distributions for several years, and i must say its the distributor i feel is
best for ME and MY company.
I still have a production server running an old SuSE 9.1 instalation.
It's been running 24/7 and without hickups for about 2-3 years. I only just
recently replaced it with a fresher version. Mainly due to the fact that the
replacing hardware got good enough to warrant a newer version.
But i still deviated from the original ext3 "design" and choose XFS as my
filesystem. And it runs windowmaker instead of KDE or gnome.
Its still a SuSE system, and it still is supported by upgrades.
Thats the lovely thing about running a Linux environment, i can choose!
Whatever issues you have had with KDE and/or Gnome, i suspect there is a
solution for it online.
Not like the problems you may encounter under Windows, where a problem may be
solved until the next "major release", or it may never, depending on the kind
of problem you have.
I havent seen a bug or disfeature that SuSE hasnt either fixed or found other
solutions for.
Just my 2 cents or raving worth
