Subject: [suse-sles-e] SLES10 SP1 and zypper - a solution

As I always had big problems with automated updates using "rug"
(rug found no updates - you did) I was very glad to hear that
SP1 would have "zypper".
I could not find any hints how to use it with SP1 until now.

Testing it with the syntax from openSUSE 10.2 I found a strange behaviour:
It installed not only updates, but a lot of RPMs I never wanted to have,
amongst them tree different kernel RPMs!?

It seems there is a bug/misbehaviour is SP1 using the command line
"zypper up -y -t patch --skip-interactive".

So I made some tests and found the solution:
Changing the type "patch" to "package" gave the wanted
behaviour - installing security patches only.

Of course you should deactivate zmd ("rczmd stop") and deinstall
zmd and rug first.

On one of my machines zypper reinstalled zmd and rug.
I think this should be no problem any more after removing
"novell-zmd" from runlevels 3 and 5 in /etc/init.d

Maybe this information can be helpful for other admins.

Joe
