It is long discussion. And it is one of explanations, why SLES is behind
RHEL on the market. If we compare RHEL5 vs SLES10, you will see that RHEL5
looks as SLES* service pack 1 by # of problems and # of software supported.
And now compare beta programs in RHEL (available for everyone for a very
long time, so that companies can prepare) and SLES (black cat in the dark
room) - answer became obvious.
After all I used simpler approach (looking onto the quality of the systems):
- treat SLES10 as OpenBeta
- treat SLES10 Sp1 as a production release.
(We did the same with SLES9, and it appear to be a right approach).
On the good side, even if I don't know why Novell is so stubborn and don't
open Beta SP (at least for those who
requests it explicitly), I can confirm that SLES10 SP1 is really a serious
improvement to the SLES10.

I wish I hadn't missed that request. First I noticed
there was a beta program was when, around BrainShare
time, Novell posted a notice that is STILL on the
Linux pages of the Novell site, saying the open beta
was available for download from the beta program page,
which I subsequently found was not true, and could
find no way to obtain the beta (other than by jumping
in my DeLorean and going back to March, and going to
BrainShare where they apparently were handing them
out...)
Please say again why SLE will never have an open beta?
Open beta is such a handy thing for folx like me, as
an admin, to get a pre-release look at what's to come.
Jim.
