I had a bunch of trouble with this as well. I didn't have
a real glass CRT around to try, but I did try a number of
terminal emulator solutions, from MS-Kermit on a DOS box
to C-Kermit, minicom and even Seyon on Linux; they all
would mess up more or less as you describe -- the terminal
emulation was just too broken to handle whatever escape
sequences yast was generating.
The one solution I did eventually get to work was actually
one of the simplest. I had an x86 Linux box (Caldera LTP,
FWIW) and I connected from that machine's serial port to
the SPARC's ttya via a null modem cable. I then switched to
a virtual console (i.e., not in X) on the x86 box and used
the cu command ("cu -l ttyS0 -s 9600") to connect. From
there, the yast setup worked flawlessly.
