    Never mind. I answered my own question. I didn't realize that there were
    multiple images on the CD accessible via SILO.

    How would I go about firing up yast1 for installation?

    Since I don't have a CD burner, I needed to find a vendor that would sell me
    CDs. Linux System Labs had them in stock and shipped promptly. The top
    level directory of the first disk indicates that the disks are supposed to
    include an english reference manual. Unfortunately, I've only been able to
    locate the german version. I managed to find the english version on the net
    though.

    I'm assuming you attempted to use yast2 for installation... instead try
    to use yast1 for a serial console installation.
