The stuff at linuxdoc.org was only marginally helpful to me.
I stumbled across the xdm-config file and followed the instructions it
contains to allow the SuSE box to listen for XDMCP or chooser requests. I
can now raise a kdm login window on a remote host on my network. The only
piece missing is how to configure things to allow a root login via a kdm
session. I'm not sure if this is a /etc/securetty setting, an xdm or kdm
setting or something to do with pam modules.
Thanks for your patience and helpful assistance.

I believe there's a HOWTO at www.linuxdoc.org on this.
