Hi Rik,
I installed Suse 7.0 on a Sparcstation 20, about two weeks ago. I did
everything from CD. The install was flawless, which I would have expected,
seeing that the hardware is rather well behaved (all Sun HW).
Since then I also got Openssh installed, so now I have a working secure
shell server.
I'm currently having problems compiling the cyrus IMAP server, I can't get
passed the config scripts, it's complaining about a db_create() function
that it can't find. I don't think the problem is related to the SPARC
architecture though.
I find it quite nice to be able to use the same environment (both console
and GUI) on my Sun box as on my x86 boxes.
The only drawback I have found so far is that if you want anything on your
box, you usually have to get it from sources. The only binaries I was able
to get directly from a site were the Mozilla browser (M18, I think that's
the latest stable....). It's slow as molass, but hey, it looks great !!
The Netscape on the distro is 4.5, anything more recent is nowhere to be
found, which is why I went to Mozilla.
I was planning on using vi / gcc as development tools on my Sun box. I
don't think too many of the popular IDE's have a version that runs on Sparc
Linux. Java support is available at least from Blackdown.org, at JDK 1.2.2
(not 1.3 yet). I haven't tried it yet.
My box has been running for two weeks without a glitch now (like duh, I
wouldn't expect anything else :)
