I installed SuSE for sparc on an ancient ELC and it happily worked for me
with only the glitch that the installation crashed after it ran out of
packages on the first CD which meant I had to install anything on the
second CD myself and add stuff like the kernel.
Other than that my main gripe with SuSE is that there hasn't been much
attention to the difference between PC and sparc: yast still wants tae
install lilo and XF86Config wants to install only i386 X servers.
But basicly all is barry and I suspect if you want a cross platform
solution (although I've never found computers to dissolve that well) SuSE
is as good as anything except maybe debian (which brings it's own brand of
niggles).
