    Whenever KDE2 starts a program it actually starts a program called
    kdeinit and tells kdeinit to start the program. kdeinit puts an entry
    in the taskbar straight away while the program starts up, maybe it does
    more than this too. Hence all the different programs that are part of a
    kde desktop appear in top as kdeinit. If you run kpm, it will show you
    the program name, it lists them as for example kdeinit:kicker.

    10 or 20 processes seems fairly normal when you consider that lots of
    the kde desktop is running as seperate programs, plus all the little
    accesories, mail notifiers etc.
