Subject: CD-R media for Older SPARC CD readers (was re: SuSE 7 cd roms)

    (This is just an FYI)

On a related note, I had been having difficulties finding
CD-R media that was compatible with the CD drive on a
couple of my older SPARCstations (They are Toshiba model
    XM-4101TASUNSLCD, one a rev 3424 and one a rev 1084
according to dmesg). The newer 12X media that is commonly
availble in stores around where I live -- the stuff that
comes on spindles or in shrink-wrap for around $0.25 per
platter -- just wouldn't work in the SPARC drive, at least
when burned by my CD-R drive (a Mitsumi CR-4802TE).

    Anyway, I recently found some media that *would* work;
CompUSA sells it in ten-packs, with the thin style jewel
cases, for $4.99 per box. It is SKU# 271048, described
as "Digital Audio Recordable, 80 Minutes, 5-color CD
Assortment". No telling how long they will offer it,
or how long it will be the same stuff under that SKU.
CompUSA's website lists the manufacturer as FMI, and
the manufacturer's part number as "EP40094G", but those
numbers are nowhere to be found on the packaging.

The only other media I'd found to work was some older (and
now unavailable) "gold" platters that also were labled for
audio recording (these are the ones with the treble clef
image and the words "Digital Audio" on the CD itself), so
I suppose that it's possible that it's the digital audio
spec that makes the difference. In any event, using this
media I was able to boot the SuSE-SPARC distribution from
the internal CD-ROM; using other media I was not able to
mount the CD at all, either from the OBP or from Linux.

If you don't have a CompUSA near you, they sell them online at
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=271048

I've only tried these with a single CD writer, which
is attached to a Windows 98 machine and using the
software that came with the drive (NTI CD-Maker Pro 3),
    so your mileage may vary.
