Thanks for Thorsten Kukuk for the answer.

Problem: Installing SuSE 7.0 on my Ultra 60 I got an error after
rebooting the machine. Tipical from a newbie (!).
Using the default installation (just pressing enter and leaving YaST2 to
work alone), the silo was installed with a wrong setup and without
initrd. Why ? Only God knows the answer !

    Solution:
Using the SuSE CD1 (boot cdrom), I canceled the installation and booted
into linuxrc. Under the menu "boot installed system" I got the system
working (my root partition was /dev/sda1, but silo had a wrong pointer
    to /dev/sda5).
The problem was, the YaST2 didn't installed silo correctly and an initrd
    was missing.
    I checked if /etc/rc.config had a line with INITRD_MODULES="sym53c8xx".
After that, I used "mk_initrd" to create a initrd block and renewed
/etc/silo.conf with the right partiion and initrd.
Run silo and !prima! the system works again.

    Have fun !
    Andre
