    No, I cannot even ping another machine plugged into the same hub, using
    the IP address (NOT hostname). Most TCP/IP stacks that I am familiar
    with would not require an /etc/hosts entry to do this.

    Yes, my /etc/resolv.conf is populated with known working nameservers
    that work fine on my other machines.

    No, I cannot ping an Internet address either.

    And before you ask, the network hardware works just fine since I was
    running Solaris 8 prior to installing SUSE Linux.
