Interesting. Your suggestion seems to be correct. As an FYI, I was trying
to mk_initrd from the SuSE Compiled kernel_2.4.2 and the mount -oloop,
initiated from mk_initrd, would go into "DL" process status and stay there,
hung. Rebooting into the stock 2.2.18, and re-running mk_initrd worked just
fine.

You don't need to pass any info to mk_initrd if your kernel is
called /boot/vmlinuz, /boot/vmlinuz_24 or /boot/vmlinuz.suse
I'm not sure about plain 2.4.7, but there are some 2.4 kernel
versions which have big problems with loop devices.
