Since I started this discussion here, I'll drop a note to close it.
After this request and one or two similar queries went around for a
while, it made it to the general <sparclinux> list, and David S.
Miller was kind enough to respond.
With his tip I was able to add DPMS and screen blanking on 'xset s b'
command, both of which work for my specific configuration (which is
Creator3D/FFB2+ Vertical, GDM-20E20 monitor) but are untried on anything
else. Hence, for me this issue is closed. (Assuming I am willing to
rebuild XF86 if I upgrade.) Thanks to everyone who responded.
If anyone else is interested in this, I can supply my changes to
the XFree86 sunffb driver as source replacements or as a patch file,
so long as you understand:
1. My changes are to Xfree86 4.1.99(CVS) of early November. This
should not matter much, however, because the driver seems hardly
ever to change much.
2. I am not a graphics card expert. All I did was take Miller's
information on how to control the Creator card in the area I
was interested in, and then I played with the Creator's
driver. I just forced it to work similarly to how other drivers
handle DPMS; specifically, the mach64 driver since I knew it
handled my particular monitor correctly, until what it did seemed
about right. So, if you take what I have, but it doesn't work for
you, I'll gladly accept any fixes you might have, but I probably
can't help you much in turn, though.
3. I have posted essentially the same information to the XFree86
[Xpert] list. I don't know if they will want to take this issue up
after the 4.2 release is stablized or not. (There are relatively
very few XFree86 users with Sun Creator/Elite graphics cards, it
seems.)
Regards,
Ferris
