I just did a fresh install of 7.3 on my Sparcstation 20 which has 9.1G
disk, 160MB RAM and a SM71.

I used to have 7.1 on it earlier. Now the response from the computer
(when running KDE/X) is much, much slower, and that is too bad. I
realize that havent been able to find all the switches to turn off all
the (IMO unnecessary) animated stuff yet.

Will I have the same response in KDE when all this is switched off?

I've tried WindowMaker as well which (of course) is much snappier.

Any recommendations on a window manager that is fast and fancy?
