I had the same problem. I installed SUSE linux 7.1 on my Ultra 5 and
have it dual boot with Solaris 8. I have since upgraded to 7.3. Please
see my article at:
Look in the November 2001 issue for the article "Installing Linux on a
Sun SPARC Ultra 5". If that does not answer your questions send another
email and I will try to help.
Basically it needs a Solaris disk label and not a Linux disk label
on the disk. I did this with the Solaris format command instead
of fdisk.
