Dear mailing list:
I have recently been trying to compile a 2.4 series kernel for my Ultra 5 (I
sent a SUCCESS message earlier). The kernel now works, but for the major caveat
that my removable drives [/dev/fd0, /dev/cdrom] don't seem to want to work
properly any more.
I looked in /etc/filesystems and made sure all the filesystems listed there were
compiled into my 2.4.1 kernel (ftp.kernel.org kernel, where do I get vger
source?) and I have PC style floppy support, IDE support. The floppy sort of
works, but I get kernel messages about SABRE0: pci errors, and files don't seem
to copy right. Also, I don't get the nice long file names (again, same
/etc/filesystems and /etc/fstab works fine on 2.2.16, bad on 2.4.1!). CDs, on
the other hand, don't mount at all. (mount complains about wrong option, wrong
fs type, bad superblock, etc. even though I didn't change a thing in /etc/fstab)
Also, it's difficult to get audio CDs to play properly; I have to eject and
reinsert the CD and then only XMCD will do the trick, KSCD is all kinds of
problematic. I have gotten the occasional ext2fs complaint from the kernel, but
my fixed disk acts pretty well, all things considered.
I really would like to be able to switch completely over to 2.4.x, but right now
I have to keep falling back on 2.2.16 to get stuff off floppies and CDs.
Sincerely,
Sean Callanan
