Sun Systems use the following scheme to determine MAC addresses:
The hostid of the system is combined with Suns's manufacturer code
by inserting "20" (the manufacturers code for Sun Microsystems) after the
second digit of the system's hostid
Therefore, you will be limited to a single MAC address, regardless of the
number of interfaces attached to the system.
By changing the local-mac-address? setting in the NVRAM alone is not enough.
There should be other changes that will have to be made in order to allocate
a MAC address to each interface. I am not sure what they are, but I believe
that changing this setting from false to true, only provides a means for
overriding the MAC address of the interface manually, either by changes on
the interface itself (in case the interface has its own unique MAC address)
or by changes to the startup scripts responsible for activating the
interfaces)
As far as deactivating the second hme interface goes, it can be done by
typing "ifconfig <device> unplumb" from a terminal window. <device> implies
either eith0, or eth1.
This command will unconfigure that ethernet device from the system,
effectively disabling it.
I am not sure if Linux also creates a hostname.<device> file in /etc the way
that Solaris does. If it does, then delete this file also by typing "rm
/etc/hostname.<device>" where <device> is either eth0, of eth1.
I will try to find out what can be done to manually override the MAC address
for ethernet devices. Hopefully someone out there has done it already in
the past and will be kind enough to share this information.

i'm experiencing serious problems with setting mac addresses on a sun netra
t1 with 2 built-in hme interfaces.
i have tried setting 'setenv local-mac-address? true' at the 'ok' prompt,
but suse will still show the same mac
address for both hme interfaces (eth0 and eth1).
is there any way to change this - or maybe completely disable the second
hme interface?
