Subject: strange experiences with netra t1

'ifconfig eth1 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx' worked in the end.
    thanks a lot!

but it didn't resolve the problem i have with my sparc suse netra t1.

maybe someone likes to read through the following and has an idea.

    scenario:

netra t1 is an outer proxy in a class c network - let's just assume, that
    it
is 66.66.66.0/24. my netra has 66.66.66.1 on eth0 interface, eth1 is down
    and not
connected. the netra is running sparc suse 7.
there are 2 other proxies, who have 66.66.66.101 and 66.66.66.102 and are
    running
    solaris 2.6.

    strange phenomenon:

both solaris proxies can 'telnet' www.ibm.com on port 80 and www.ibm.de on
    port 80.
if i enter a 'GET' then, i get HTML code on stdout - so i assume a
    http-connection to
www.ibm.com is possible, which is quite useful for a proxy. :).

the netra can telnet www.ibm.de on port 80 and gets me the same html
    output.
www.ibm.com on port 80, however, does not reply.

i monitored every network device the packets pass on their way until they
    leave 'my'
infrastructure. i can definitely 'see' them leaving my outest internet
router towards the www. but there
    is nothing coming back.

that looks like a routing problem with the isp's network - at least i
    thought it was.
i then disconnected a solaris proxy (66.66.66.101), reconfigured eth0 on my
    suse netra to
66.66.66.101 and correspondingly cleared the cam tables on the switch,
    where all proxies are
connected. unfortunately - the result has been always the same.
    www.ibm.de:80 always
    responds, and www.ibm.com:80 always doesn't.

the solaris proxies get an answer from both, ibm.de and ibm.com, regardless
    what ip address
    they are using.

i'm pretty sure that there is no network(routing) or firewall problem -
because i can see the packets
traveling out on my internet router's serial-interface.

i had always restarted /etc/rc.d/route when i changed the ip address.

    i'm rather helpless now.
maybe anyone of you guys has an idea?

    Best regards
