I had this kind of problem as well (on a SPARC 5), and
ultimately had the best luck by setting it up like this:
On the machine that you use as the terminal emulator,
run in a virtual console (e.g. no X windows) and, rather
than using a terminal emulator such as minicom or kermit,
simply use the the "cu" command to connect to the port. In
this way, the Linux console driver becomes the "terminal
emulator", and yast1 feels much more at home.
