Subject: Failure of SuSE7.0 install/ scsi partioning problem

I am trying to upgrade a SparcStaion 20 with a new Western Digital 4360 4GB sca scsi drive. I tried a fresh install of SuSE 7.0. Installation proceeds normally until the kernel is copied/installed. It fails, and the next error message is that the root password can not be set. The SS20 will not boot. I made from scratch another Disk 1 of SuSE (re-downloaded the iso and used MD5SUM), but the install failed in the same spot.

I've tried installing RedHat 6.2 and Mandrake Corporate Server. Somehow, something is wrong with disk partitoning and formatting. The partioning with SuSE seemed to work OK.

Finally, I was able to partition 1GB and a 128MB swap and successfully install RH6.2. I don't know quite how to use fdisk to attempt to create additional partitions. (Not something I just want to experiment with!)

Maybe the scsi drive is SCSI-III, but my SS20 uses SCSI-II? I tried fooling with the jumpers, but the pins I chose the first time (id=0, non-term negotiation) were the only ones that worked.

Any help with this problem is greatly appreciated!
