Hello,
I'm a linux/unix novice. I have a Sun Ultra Enterprise (1) that I'd like to
install linux on. It currently has Solaris 2.6 installed on it, but I'd like
to wipe that and just let Linux take over the whole system.
The trouble I'm having is getting the thing to boot off either a CD that I
burned with an ISO or off it's floppy disk drive. I'm running into all kinds
of roadblocks with this.
I downloaded two ISO images, both of which have the correct checksum (I used
MD5sums in a Dos box...). One is the redhat 6.2 image, the other is the Suse
7.1 image. I've tried burning both onto a CD using EZ-CD creator deluxe.
Neither has produced a readable disk for me. I've burned the disk using
track-at-once and disk-at-once methods.
I've also tried booting it off it's floppy drive with a disk I created using
the boot64.img and rawrite.exe. The image comes from redhat's ftp site for
6.2. When I try to boot I get "Bad Magic Number in Disk Label."
In either case, I'd love to be able to just burn a bootable sun linux
installation disk, from just about any distribution, but so far I have not had
any success.
Also, I know the CD drive is functioning and it will boot the Solaris 2.6 disk
when I use the "boot cdrom" command from the Prom. It also seemed to be able
to read the files from a i386 redhat 6.2 CD I had, which was a CD-R, but I'm
not 100% sure if it's able to read all CD-r's of different manufacturers.
The date on the CD drive itself was 1997, so I'm hoping it's pretty compatible
with a typical CD-r.
The floppy i'm not about. I added it after the OS (solaris) was installed so
I don't know if I have to configure the system to use the floppy drive. I
can't seem to use the fdformat command on the floppy disk drive (tried to
create that magic number label).
Anyway, here's some various output from the PROM so you know more about what
I'm dealing with:
PROM version: Release 3.1 Version 1 created 1996/03/08
OBP 3.1.1
POST 3.10.2
devalias output:
cdrom /sbus/espdma@e,8400000/esp@e,8800000/sd@6,0:f
disk /sbus/espdma@e,8400000/esp@e,8800000/sd@0,0
floppy /sbus/SUNW,fdtwo <---could this be why I can't format the floppy?
.speed:
CPU Speed : 143.00 MHz
Ram: 192MB
Sorry for the long message, I just wanted to make sure I gave all the info you
might need.
Thanks for your help,
Jason
