First, thanks for the help and suggestions! I totally forgot about
termination on SCSI! (I've only really worked with IDE on PCs)
I spent some time this past weekend playing with the jumper settings on
the drive. (As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, you guessed
the correct model number of the drive) I did download the jumper
settings and played with numerous settings. I'm now 95% certain that
my problems are tied to the drive. But I'm only 50% certain that the
problem is the drive itself. It may be mis-configured or, as someone
else mentioned, may be a compatibility issue with the PROM. Since I'm
new to both Sun hardware and SCSI, I'm quickly reaching what I know to
try. I added a jumper to terminate the drive, but that didn't seem to
have an affect on anything. The documentation showed a second set of
jumpers relating to how the termination works. (Namely, terminate power
from drive, terminate power from SCSI bus, terminate power TO SCSI bus)
Can someone help me with what the correct configuration would be to get
this working, or as someone else pointed out, am I hitting an issue
with the PROM in that the SparcClassics won't work with an internal
2 gig disk? I might be able to scrounge up enough parts to try putting
it on the external SCSI, but would prefer to avoid that if at all
possible. I've looked at the UltraLinux site, the sun hardware sites,
but they don't tell me what the max sizes for drives are, and how to
configure them correctly.
Also, does anyone know of some software that can be used on the Sparcs
to test the drive and see if its working correctly?
Thanks for the help everyone!!!
P.S. - Sorry for the long-winded post and slightly off-topic, but I am
trying to get SUSE installed.
