    I finally fixed this problem :-)....

    The solution that worked for me was the following:

    At the SILO prompt, I entered "linux single"

    This booted the system and asked for the root password....This let me into the
    system but all disks were mounted READ ONLY....

    To change this, I went to the "/etc/rc.d" directory and ran the "boot"
    script...This worked and let me into the system READ/WRITE....

    I then edited "/etc/inittab" and commented out all virtual consoles 1-6...I
    uncommented the S0 entry to allow the serial login..This finally allowed me
    into the system at runlevel 3...

    One note..,,The serial console should really be set through YAST's
    configuration option so that it knows about the change...Otherwise it will be
    commented out in "/ettc/inittab" the next time YAST is run...
